David Hayes, chief data officer, The Open University

Describe your career to date

My career started on the graduate scheme at Anglian Water then on through the telecoms industry and onto banking with Santander UK. During this time I qualified as an accountant, which led me into analytics and naturally onto data.

My eyes were opened to the importance of data as the essential business ingredient that it has always been when I took part in (and then subsequently led) teams that successfully migrated of data from legacy to new systems at Santander UK.

Data has been my home ever since.

Initially leading various operational data teams, I was then asked to take on the new role of CDO for Santander UK to first lead the data compliance under BCBS 239 and then develop the full end to end data capability.

In 2019, I took the decision to follow my passion into education, becoming the first CDO at the Open University, where I am now continuing my data journey and am privileged to be building a new and exciting data chapter in support of our staff and students.

What stage has your organisation reached on its data maturity journey?

Overall we remain quite immature, but there are parts, particularly in analytics and in strategic use of data where we are maturing well, and we have a good understanding of what we need to do to improve.

Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for

The chief data office is part of the chief digital and information office, which in turn reports into the executive. We are a growing team of 75 to 100, depending on the extent of development, project and programme work ongoing at any one time, and we take responsibility for the end to end of data across the whole organisation.

We work as embedded as possible within the outcome facing areas of the university, while building and preserving the data pathways and careers for our staff as part of a growing centre of excellence.
