Gavin Goodland, chief data officer, National Grid

Describe your career to date

I do like the double meaning of “career” as a way to describe this. As the question forces me to contemplate a retrospective response, I do think the most valuable, fun and intriguing aspect is what I would summarise as “crossing boundaries”. This has happened from an employer, geographic and organisation perspective. My career has been in both suppliers and buyers, across countries and continents, within digital/IT or business functions. In this journey, particularly at the interfaces, you notice data opportunities lurking, and why I am fundamentally attracted to working on data challenges in the science and engineering domains.

What stage has your organisation reached on its data maturity journey?

Like many asset-intensive businesses, National Grid has seen a rapid progression with its digital data maturity and wants to be on the frontier of performance with data. Each of our business units across the US and UK have very active data agendas in their own right, building and operating the appropriate arrangements for efficiency in their respective environments. Now recognising the need for a view of data capability across the entire organisation, the global chief data office has recently been created, under my leadership.

Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for

At present, I directly manage a team within our IT and digital organisation, with global responsibilities for data and analytics strategy, data architecture, governance and capability. Our team is located across both the UK and the US, and forms part of a wider ecosystem of data and analytics professionals. Our purpose is to inspire the organisation with the art of the possible, and to support our businesses in delivering value through advancing our collective data and analytical capabilities.
