Describe your career to date
I started in retail at Tesco, where I was always known as the “data guy”, providing insights into performance through coloured Post-it notes on brown paper. Following that, I moved to easyJet as an accountant, where we had so much data, but we were using Excel as our business information tool. I wanted to create a Treemap visualisation I had seen on the BBC, which ultimately led to us evaluating BI tools and introducing Tableau. I led the BI programme, developed a centre of excellence, started leading the London Tableau User Group, and was named a Tableau ambassador.
In 2015, I switched to Jones Lang Services (JLL). I was excited by the data journey corporate real estate was on, leading its largest global account team and driving innovation and tool adoption across the BI space, while delivering over $40m of quantified benefit through BI.
In 2020, I was named the global lead for BI, performance management and innovation, taking the work I had previously done and creating an international community of 150 data practitioners based across nine countries to maximise our benefits.
What stage has your organisation reached on its data maturity journey?
JLL is considered a mature data organisation in our corporate real estate sector. My team has a clear strategy and a plan on the page, with our vision, ambition and values all articulated and a data fluency team to help increase the maturity further.
Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for
I lead a team of over 150 data professionals located in over ten countries worldwide. We use Tableau and Alteryx to support our internal teams and external clients and have some of the highest-certified data rockstars in the group. In each region, I have a variable resource team, who, through agile processes, supports many stakeholders while also having some large, dedicated teams for our biggest clients. Underpinning the analytics team is our SET (strategy, enablement and technology) function, guiding our annual programmes and enabling our analysts through collaboration, community and gamification to be the most proficient in our tools and processes.
