2023 DataIQ 100

Kyle Winterbottom, founder and CEO, Orbition Group

Describe your career to date

I’ve been in the data and analytics talent advisory space for the past 12 years, and have helped some of the most recognised and respected brands in the world to build and scale their data, analytics and AI teams and capabilities. In 2020, I launched Orbition Group, now one of the world’s leading data, analytics and AI full-service talent solutions organisations.

We operate at the intersection of executive search, people analytics, recruitment and advisory and consultancy services, providing bespoke products and solutions to tackle the modern-day data and analytics talent and resource conundrum.

All of that is underpinned by our Driven by Data community, which consists of our data leadership events that take place in various worldwide locations each quarter, our podcast which as of today boasts over 20,000 listeners in over 130 countries, and finally our mentorship programme – a free programme designed to develop and upskill the next generation of data leaders by giving them access to, and pairing them with some of the world’s most recognised and influential data leaders.

What key skills or attributes do you consider have contributed to your success in this role?

Developing a strong community of professionals and looking for ways to constantly add value to them with the sole purpose of driving our industry forward - plus, always delivering.

What level of data maturity do you see across the data industry and what tends to hold this back?

I feel we have a very unique perspective of the data and analytics industry as a whole, given the breadth of organisations and individuals we work with or have as part of our community.

Interestingly, most of the challenges that these people face are similar in nature but at different sizes/scales, depending on the organisation they operate within. Levels of maturity are largely dictated by how far into the journey an organisation is. That said, I think in the large majority of organisations data maturity is still quite low. Despite the fact that there are a number of things which hold us back, I feel the most common/prominent is that too many organisations/business leaders view data and analytics as a technology play and often fail to decouple data and analytics from IT.

Is that a literacy or cultural challenge? Arguably both, but I fear that until the data community can influence a change in mindset at the top-table, before these decisions are made, we’ll continue to face an uphill battle.
