Chloe Bones, analytics and data science lead, IAG Cargo

Describe your career to date

I started my career as an industrial placement student in 2015 as an operational research consultant at British Airways within the commercial analytics team and continued the graduate scheme after completing my mathematics undergraduate degree in 2017. I worked on a diverse range of projects over this time, across commercial and operational portfolios, where I honed my skills in the tools and techniques required as a data analyst.

I joined BA’s sister company IAG Cargo in 2019, shifting my focus from passengers to freight but staying within analytics. The Covid pandemic was a very busy time for us, which I feel raised the profile of the data team due to the support required from the business during such a critical time.

I was appointed as an analytics and data science team lead within the data, insights and operational research team in May 2021. Since then, I have sought to grow the team (which has tripled in size) and develop the business understanding within the team so that we can better support stakeholders make data driven decisions and designing data driven processes.

I have been very lucky in my current role to have an excellent manager who has been a huge advocate for my development and built my confidence as a team lead in data. I have witnessed the change over my time at IAG Cargo at the renewed focus on data and analytics and am very excited for the opportunities for us the develop as a team in 2023.

Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for

I lead a team of six analysts who work closely with business stakeholders to develop an analytics portfolio that will generate the most value for IAG Cargo. This could be from building stability in our reporting suite and developing data quality improvement projects, to developing dashboards and modelling that supports data-driven processes. Our current focus is developing a strategic data roadmap for each department that delivers strong foundations to support the day to day running of the business and unlock the potential of advanced modelling and data science.

Tell us about any ambitions you have in terms of becoming a data leader

My ambitions are around continuous development of my data and analytics knowledge, as well as learning what is required to build a team of highly motivated individuals who understand the needs of the business and challenge the business on its goals while inspiring them to expand their thinking. The most important factors to my choices will always be based on the people and culture of a team and being in an environment where you can continuously learn and keep up with ever changing technology.
