Julie Elins, head of business intelligence, Kennedys

Describe your career to date

I started with a dream to pursue a career in forensic science, and even though I very much enjoyed most aspects, I was pretty sure the science lab was not the place for me.

My first job was as a fraud analyst. Both professionally and personally this role taught me so much, such as the importance of a good team and that I excelled within an environment where management empowered you to make a difference. As a result, across the seven years at this organisation, I progressed into four different roles.

Looking back I see the synergy between the degree and analyst role as the scientific mindset which for me can be summarised as a desire to be inquisitive with numbers (some might say nosey!), and the importance of a detailed and evidenced approach.

An introduction to motherhood, made me rethink, and part of that decision entailed looking for more local jobs away from London. Initially, I worried this meant stalling my career, yet the complete opposite happened. Upon joining this organisation it wasn’t long before my role was re-emerging as more.

One further job move to Kennedys five years ago and I haven’t looked back. Again, finding myself inside an organisation that could immediately see my value, and various roles later I am now head of business intelligence managing global teams that are responsible for the successful delivery of client reporting, data insights, BI, and master data governance.

And at the heart of all of the roles that I have undertaken lies the importance of data and its utilisation.

Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for

I am responsible for Kennedy’s client reporting, data insights, business intelligence and master data governance teams. Across these teams there are 47 people with roles varying between managers, analysts, developers, and data governance specialists with the teams based across the UK, US and Sydney.

The applications and or skillsets that are at our foundation are PowerBI, Excel, SQL and SSRS. But within our data strategy we are exploring the benefits of other applications.

Tell us about any ambitions you have in terms of becoming a data leader

I have ambitions to lead data teams that are deemed a useful addition and asset to the business they are in. To lead a team that can be proud to say we’re helping to change the conversation around the use of data and within their own right be seen as trusted ‘data’ partners where their voices are heard and outputs are trusted
