Describe your career to date
After studying biochemistry at the University of Nottingham I think it’s safe to say I was clueless, as many are, on my next career step. I joined the Auto Trader graduate programme, where I was lucky enough to spend some time with their learning and development partners to delve into what skills and attributes came naturally to me and therefore where to start my career. This led me to a role as a delivery lead, working on direct-to-consumer software development projects and I’ve never looked back. It’s here I developed a passion for the consumer experience, the power of experimentation and I was fascinated by the scale of data available.
I joined ITV at the start of a five-year data transformation programme, bringing data-led insight right into the heart of everything we do, from commissioning in the studios division all the way to marketing in media and entertainment. We’re in the midst of building a data mesh, an interconnected web of data products, based on value cases from business stakeholder needs that can be used across the breadth of the business. My timing also coincided with the build and launch of the ambitious new streaming platform, ITVX, where I managed the data insight team responsible for building the data capabilities surrounding this proposition.
Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for
I’m responsible for a cross-functional team of data specialists, including analysts, data engineers and data scientists, which at its peak consisted of around 15 individuals. Our main focus has been supporting the direct-to-consumer business by building the data architecture needed to deliver data and insight on the launch and performance of ITVX. We collaborate with a wide range of business stakeholders including product, technology, content, distribution and finance, facilitating conversations on how we convert business requirements to data capabilities that will revolutionise our decision making. From helping the business to secure the foundations, we’re then able to feed complex data science models that deliver predictive analysis far beyond the realms of human possibility.
How did you develop – and continue to develop – your current skills or attributes?
I’m thankful to Auto Trader’s graduate scheme for supercharging my development right at the beginning of my career. It gave me opportunities that would normally take years to experience which fuelled my determination. I’m currently on an internal ITV training programme for women in the tech industry, it gives me the opportunity to network, learn from others and reflect on both my strengths and weaknesses.
I feel incredibly lucky to be in this industry, so I try to learn any way I can, I’ve been having a go at the SQL test we give to analysts before they do their final interview. I don’t have a technical background but I believe it’s really important to have an appreciation for the work that my colleagues do. In my role, it’s necessary to be able to facilitate complex technical conversations, so whatever I can do to close that gap is useful.
