Wade Munsie, senior advisor, McKinsey and Company

Describe your career to date

After starting my career as a business intelligence enthusiast at BT, I took my passion to the movie industry. First at Warner Bros, then at Sony, working in the business performance, innovation and consumer insights space.

Then I took a slight pivot to the Royal Mail to help lead on a huge data transformation project, eventually becoming chief data officer. I had a lot of fun building what was, at the time, quite a progressive CDO office.

I took that knowledge to GSK, where I set up a CDO office from scratch as part of the biggest demerger in FTSE history.

Finally, I joined McKinsey & Company. Not a faint-hearted leap, but I wanted to be challenged again by exciting problems and learn from the best on how to solve them. My current role involves building diverse teams and empowering exceptional performance for clients, delivering deep commercial insight and data products aligned to the corporate strategic vision.

What key skills or attributes do you consider have contributed to your success in this role?

I see my superpowers being leadership and culture. Being a leader is different to being a boss and requires genuine empathy, coaching and dedication. Creating a culture that blends with the wider organisation is important, but tailoring that to create a T-shaped, highly effective and engaged team is an art.

What level of data maturity do you typically encounter across your client base and what tends to hold this back?

Data maturity is a very subjective question and depends on the client, sector, leadership and structure. I have seen differing levels from both sides of the fence and while everybody has a story of how they got there, the patterns are generally consistent.

I see three things that generally hold back maturity: ambition, culture and politics. Technology is of course an enabler but without the right intent and ambition being supported by the right culture and political clout, maturity will remain a challenge for any organisation.
