Andrew Isenman, head of technology, cloud and data, Heathrow Airport

What has been your path to power?

I joined Heathrow in 1996 as an apprentice engineer. After completing my apprenticeship, I joined Heathrow’s technology department, predominantly focusing on airport operational systems. This is where I had my first experience in data and analytics through our billing and reporting systems. From 2010 to 2012, I was fortunate enough to be a part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic programme where I worked on providing the technology needed to operate as a fully functional Olympic venue, including the data and analytics tooling needed to support over 15,000 athletes from 206 nations travelling to the games via our airport.

After this my career took a turn towards innovation, where I led the business through several digital changes including rebuilding our web presence, introducing smartphones to the enterprise, the challenges of social media integration within an enterprise and cloud computing. This gave me strong experience in enterprise digital transformation. For the last three years my role has been focused on driving digital change in the data arena, where I have led the creation of a central technology platform and coordinated the delivery of a new target operating model looking at data literacy, culture, people, governance and business prioritisation.

What impact has the pandemic had on the role of data in your company/organisation?

The pandemic has given Heathrow the opportunity to focus on where we are on our data journey. It has allowed us to focus on building a centralised platform, to make changes to our organisational structure, and review where our most valuable data resides. It has also given us an opportunity to look at data we previously would not have considered, such as infection rates which in turn has allowed us to address the demand for forecasting by using more accurate global data sets, which became exceptionally important as we moved through the pandemic.
