Johanna Hutchinson, director of analytics and data science, UK Health Security Agency

What has been your path to power?

I left a science career in academia and entered the civil service 10 years ago as a statistician. Recognising that data was key for enabling greater insights I took posts to support data-led transformations. In March 2020 I moved to DHSC to support the Covid response and since then have built a data and analytics capability to enable health data to be synthesised and passed to decision makers at pace. It has been an incredible journey, working in the heart of government and supporting an evidence-based decision-making approach throughout the pandemic.

What impact has the pandemic had on the role of data in your company/organisation?

The use of analytics has been crucial in helping the public understand the regulations that we have passed throughout the pandemic, and the nation has in turn embraced our products, including the Covid-19 dashboard, the Covid-19 app, the R-value and the slides used on the 5pm PM briefings.

Does data now have a seat at the table during strategic discussions? If not, what will it take to get it there?

We created the new UK Health Security Agency with a central data, analytics and surveillance unit, with ExCo representation. Data is a key asset of the organisation.
