Katie Ward, VP data, Sage

What has been your path to power?

My career began at the coal face, first working on IT helpdesks and soon after becoming a business intelligence consultant where I gained insight into different businesses and their data challenges. Consequently, in all my roles I have been able to bring together my knowledge of business with my technical skills to build data solutions that inform and drive business performance.

I combine these skills with building effective teams, finding the right balance of capability and personality, developing talent, and guiding teams through the process of defining and executing strategy. People and data are a company’s greatest assets, harnessing the value and power of both is essential to success.

What impact has the pandemic had on the role of data in your company/organisation?

Data used within the boundaries of privacy and compliance is key for us at Sage to understand customer behavior, their business challenges and the markets in which they operate. As an advocate for small to medium businesses, identifying how we can best serve these customers and help them knock down barriers to success is our lifeblood. This has never been truer than during the pandemic. Being able to understand the impact of the pandemic on our customers’ businesses has helped us adjust our endeavors to best serve them and contribute to them navigating through these difficult times.
