Lorenzo Bavasso, global director of data and AI, digital, BT Global

What has been your path to power?

I started my career in consulting where I learned how to define and implement a vision and saw projects in several innovation areas, including web applications, supply chain automation, data and business intelligence. I then joined the telecoms industry where I always worked in big business

and technology transformations. I kept moving from transformation to transformation in different areas of the business, from back office to customer management/omni-channel and, finally, data because I enjoyed the challenge and to see the evolution and progress around me.

All that experience in driving business transformation prepared me to understand and lead the big cultural change that is required to become data-driven. I have started the journey in Vodafone with its global big data implementation and then moved across the industry to see the different flavours of defining, implementing and running data and AI into a large organisation.

The last two years in BT Global have been truly amazing. We started the challenging journey towards being a data-driven business, we made a massive progress both in implementing best-in-class cloud technology and completely transforming our operating model around data and AI that now is being integrated in the business and is an integral part of our digital revolution!

Lorenzo Bavasso

What impact has the pandemic had on the role of data in your company/organisation?

This year was still challenging for everyone’s work and personal life. We didn’t stop and, if possible, we moved even faster with our transformation. After the initial need to understand and adapt tactically, we could see patterns for more permanent changes that the pandemic introduced, changes that are here to stay. Flexibility for our employees, modularity of our products, digital, cloud, AI-first principles became pillars and a reference for what we do today and for how we build our business for tomorrow. Data became even more critical in this second year of the pandemic because it allowed us to shift from reacting tactically to start acting strategically around it and getting ready for  the progressive return to a new normal life.
