8. Aimee Reed, director of data, Metropolitan Police Service

Describe your career to date

I have been in policing for 21 years. I was chuffed to bits to find I could actually apply my degree in Criminology (much to my parents’ joy and relief), starting my career in intelligence analysis. I worked my way through a number of traditionally "cops-only" roles, including leading the Sensitive Intelligence Unit that acquires and analyses all the covert policing data - a fantastic job - before completing the National Police Strategic Command Course. The SCC is a "Sandhurst" for the most senior officers and staff and is where I had my "data epiphany". Since 2015, I have spearheaded the Met Police’s Data Transformation Programme, building the first Data Office in Policing, establishing and delivering a data strategy and building our data science capability.

Since 2021, I have led for all 43 forces nationally on data and have embedded a National Police Data Board, which I chair. Law enforcement has a strong public mission, one that has taken some hard knocks in public confidence over the past 12 months. We are committed to using data, a relatively untapped asset, to regain our communities’ trust in the role we play in keeping everyone safe.

What stage has your organisation reached on its data maturity journey?

We know we have made considerable progress; data is certainly "on the map" and we have benchmarked our maturity so that we can continue to build on success and start to focus on areas where we need more effort.

Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for

Within the Met, I am accountable for the data and analytics strategy for the whole organisation; that’s around 45,000 employees as well as giving data to the public (9 million residents) and over 50 statutory partners. Our core data office is around 250 people and their services cover data governance, data protection, data management, data foundations (quality, literacy and skills, learning and development, and access), corporate reporting and analysis, and data science and engineering. I report to the Commissioner’s management board lead for digital, data and technology (that’s C-suite in industry language).

Nationally, I am responsible for overseeing the data capability build for all 43 forces and agencies on behalf of the Chief Constable’s Council. I report direct to a chief constable, Jo Farrell, who is the DDAT lead for policing. Here, I coordinate a team from across the UK to deliver to the 200,000- plus officers and staff that serve the public across England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
