1. Naras Eechambadi, chief global data and analytics officer, Universal Music Group

What has been your path to power? 

My journey has been a little unusual as I mostly followed opportunities that led me to a diverse set of organizations and roles. After finishing my doctorate in marketing analytics, I chose to stray from academia and joined a major advertising agency in New York City as a marketing scientist.  I was then recruited by a Bay Area start-up to develop new products for pricing and positioning merchandise released by major consumer packaged goods companies.

Around that time, McKinsey came calling and I helped set up and build its marketing science practice. That led to an opportunity to build a knowledge-based marketing team at a major bank. This experience of building teams and organizations led me to start two companies in the customer data and analytics space, both of which I successfully sold. 

 

While contemplating my next moves, I was approached by Universal Music Group to create a fan-focused data and analytics organization to support the expansion of the company’s direct-to-fan marketing and e-commerce business.
