Describe your career to date

Starting with a doctorate in consumer behavior and marketing analytics at the University of Texas at Austin, I have had a varied career spanning advertising (BBDO Worldwide), market research (NielsenIQ), strategic management consulting (McKinsey) and banking (Wells Fargo) – all in roles that involved establishing a data analytics capability (often from scratch), including infrastructure and team building. I also built and sold two companies that were at the intersection of technology, data, analytics and customer experience: one was a services company and the other was a software company. I was also the founding chairman of the board of advisors at the School of Data Science at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte and have taught at UC Berkeley and guest lectured at Duke, Yale and UNC Chapel Hill.

What stage has your organization reached on its data maturity journey?

Universal Music Group is going through a significant transformation in its data journey. We are a complex organization that has traditionally focused on artists and is now building fan and audience management data platforms to better help our artists connect with their fans.

 

Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for

UMG operates in 66 countries around the world. While my team supports all global territories, we focus on the major ones, ie, US, UK, Japan, Germany, France, Canada and Australia, while helping others when we canMy team spans data strategy, data governance, data platforms, reporting/BI, advanced analytics and data science. The team is spread across North America and Europe with significant strength in Los Angeles, New York City, London and North Carolina. I report to the president of UMG global ecommerce and business development who reports to the chairman, Sir Lucian Grainge.
