Elizabeth Beale, Data Governance Specialist, bp

Describe your career to date

My career started in investment banking regulatory compliance. A few years ago I realised that trading and financial services was moving towards a more data-driven business with the growth of algorithmic trading and customer insights to identify new business opportunities etc. This resulted in upskilling myself in data, AI and digital via online courses, degree apprenticeships etc. I soon realised that good data and efficient business processes are the key to any successful organisation. I now work for the data office in my organisation as data governance specialist.

Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for

BP Group has approximately 60,000 employees, the global trading business I am involved with has approximately 2,000 employees. My main responsibility is embedding data-driven culture, data foundations and governance across the trading organisation. I also get involved with data and digital strategy in other parts of the wider BP Group.

Tell us about any ambitions you have in terms of becoming a data leader

Everyone has a right to good data access at the click of a button. My ambition as a data leader is to provide this to the organisation.

What key skills or attributes do you consider will be essential to your success in this role?

Understanding people, changing behaviour and culture. Influencing skills and understanding organisation pain points and providing solutions, no matter how big or small. Continue to support a data driven mind set for all levels of the organisation. Never become complacent – there is always some big event that makes people go back to their old manual data habits.

How did you develop – and continue to develop – your current skills or attributes?

Learning through my peers and individuals in my organisation and external companies that are working on similar initiatives. Sharing lessons learned and solutions with others.

And what about the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders? How are you supporting their data literacy?

I am responsible for the data literacy strategy in my organisation. It is important to understand different skill levels in data teams and business stakeholders. Targeting the right awareness, courses, and learning pathways for different skill levels is key. Data is at the heart of all valuable organisations.

How do you keep pace or stay in touch with your peer group? Do you see it as important to have an active professional network?

DataIQ is a fantastic forum to help me and other organisations keep in touch with peers. Sharing lessons learned via a network such as DataIQ is invaluable.
