James Kelly, CEO and Co-Founder, Corndel

Describe your career to date

After leaving university, my first job at the House of Commons was as a researcher focusing on the UK labour market and skills development. After this, I transitioned into management consultancy, working on critical projects within the skills, education, and training sectors. In these roles, I understood the industry fully: what was done well and what could be done better. I then spent time as a special advisor to the Secretary of State of Work and Pensions, seeing the vast difference that education and training can have on people’s lives. Recognising the changes in business skills required for the economy and changes in government policy, I started looking at business opportunities. I realised the most significant way to have an impact was through high-quality workplace training and development, and I wanted to be part of an organisation that brought a new approach to this area. As a result, I co-founded Corndel in 2016. We are a strategic skills partner and data skills training company. We are all about delivering high-impact skills development programmes for the modern workforce, allowing individuals to be their professional best in data, tech, and leadership at all points in their careers. With over 300 brilliant in-house professional coaches, Corndel delivers award-winning programmes to thousands of learners, allowing businesses to excel. Corndel focuses on programmes that give learners data analytical and data literacy skills to be high-performing business professionals. Improving people’s lives through high-quality training has been the driving force of Corndel, and I have been so privileged to see the impact of our programmes on our learners and clients.

What challenges do you see for data in the year ahead that will have an impact on your clients and on the industry as a whole?

There is well-publicised proof that the UK is experiencing a data skills shortage like never before. Government data found that 48% of businesses are recruiting for roles that require hard data skills, but 46% have struggled to recruit for these roles over the last two years. Our most recent Workplace Training Report 2024 revealed that 39% of employees cannot access the correct data for effective job performance. HR leaders report that recruiting technical skills will be prioritised in 2024 – artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning engineers (61%), cybersecurity (60%), data science (59%), business analysis (56%), and software engineering (56%), all of which will enable better understanding and communication with data, teaching vital technical skills such as automation and visualisation.

How are you developing the data literacy of a) your own organisation and b) your clients?

Data-led decision-making is part of our DNA at Corndel; it is inherent in all we do. We offer brilliant data programmes in partnership with Imperial College London internally and to our clients. In the past 12 months, Corndel has increased its data programme offering, launching three new data programmes to support organisations with business change, data engineering, and data-driven leadership. Corndel is proud to partner with Imperial College Business School to deliver data programmes that allow businesses to answer both demands.

How are you preparing your organisation and your clients for AI adoption and change management?

Our recent research revealed that 52% of HR leaders do not think their organisations are ready for artificial intelligence (AI) integration, while 99% report their organisation will focus on addressing potential AI risks across their business in 2024. This is coupled with 42% of employees who agree that combining human skills with AI is the way forward. Our role as a strategic skills partner is to support our clients with change management, strategic integration, and employee empowerment through high-impact skills training. Our training demystifies AI, highlighting benefits and applications while empowering people with the necessary human skills to drive successful AI adoption.
