Jeffrey Yau, Chief Data and AI Officer, Fanatics

Describe your career to date

I am the Chief Data and AI Officer at Fanatics Collectibles, leading the development of the company’s data organization and overseeing artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and data engineering initiatives.

Previously, I served as the Global Head of Data Science and Engineering at Amazon Music, focusing on analytics and machine learning systems to support a wide range of data-driven projects. I also worked at WalmartLabs, as Vice President of Data Science, Data Engineering, and Platform Engineering, where my teams developed the data platform that powered Walmart store mobile apps and the entire store finance system. It also created end-to-end machine learning systems that enhanced customer and associate experience and had a multi-billion-dollar top-line impact annually on Walmart US.

I served as an entrepreneur-in-residence at BioStar Capital, advising on AI investment opportunities. My extensive career in quantitative finance includes leadership roles as Chief Data Scientist and Global Head of Data Science at AllianceBernstein, where I led data initiatives across investments, sales, and research; Vice President of Data Science at Silicon Valley Data Science, which was acquired by Apple; Corporate Vice President and Head of Risk Analytics and Quantitative Research at Charles Schwab Corporation; and Director of Financial Risk Consulting at KPMG.

How are you developing the data literacy of your organization, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders?

As the Chief Data and AI Officer, fostering data literacy throughout our organization is a cornerstone of my role. This responsibility entails orchestrating the build-out of our AI, data science, and data engineering capabilities. Central to this mission is the recruitment and retention of premier data talent, which is critical for driving innovation and excellence.

Equally important is establishing a deep, holistic understanding of our business imperatives, enabling us to deploy a spectrum of AI and data science methodologies effectively. Our approach involves the meticulous development of a foundational data platform specifically designed to meet the intricate data needs of our company.

Concurrently, we are dedicated to creating and refining tools that enable seamless access to and analysis of vital data, thereby empowering our business units to derive actionable insights that can significantly influence strategic directions and outcomes. Instilling a culture that inherently values and utilizes data in decision-making processes is fundamental to our strategy. Achieving this cultural shift necessitates strong, unequivocal support and commitment from our organization’s leadership.

In terms of skill enhancement within our data teams, I champion an ethos of continuous learning and professional development. This includes the provision of bespoke learning opportunities tailored to the unique needs of each team member, encouraging the pursuit of relevant courses and certifications, and fostering an environment rich in collaboration.

Through these initiatives, we not only augment our collective data literacy but also ensure our team remains at the forefront of technological advancements and industry best practices.

What role do you play in building and delivering conventional artificial intelligence solutions, including machine learning models? Are you also involved in your organization’s adoption of generative AI?

I lead the building and delivering conventional artificial intelligence solutions, including machine learning models. I am also collaborating with other leaders to apply modern technology, AI, and data science techniques to solve business imperatives where appropriate.

What stage has your organization reached on its data maturity journey?

We are at the early stage of our data maturity journey as a business.
