Martin Lynch, Chief Data Officer, CNA Hardy

Describe your career to date

I have had a varied career path, from the youngest ever Financial Controller in the NHS through to roles as Finance Director, Master Black Belt and, latterly, Program Director, leading to setting up one of the first Business Competence Centres in AXA. Working initially in Personal Lines Insurance but taking the opportunity to move over into Lloyds Commercial and Speciality in the last eight years.

How are you developing the data literacy of your organisation, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders?

Through ownership, training, and measurement. Business ownership of master data, metrics, and data as it resides within applications. Training across the whole company as a mandated half-day course run by a cross functional team supported by micro videos. Measurement through mandatory objectives across the company to use and leverage data in decision making.

Have you been able to fix the data foundations of your organisation, particularly with regard to data quality?

Foundations are essential and this has been a focus at CNA Hardy where we have simplified the landscape and provided power in the hands of users. They also own and control their data engagements with tooling to support. Data quality resides at the source system controls but where there are gaps it is closed with data quality workflow tools which monitor and close gaps as they emerge. More work is ongoing to improve these source systems to further standardise sources either from external trusted or via internal single source references from our master data system. Further training is provided to all data owners. Data translation or loss between systems is picked up by controls and tight regression testing.
