Rakshit Kapoor, Global Chief Data Officer, Chubb

Describe your career to date

Having graduated in technology and engineering, I did a Master’s in information systems and then an MBA; throughout my career I have held a number of senior data roles, predominantly in financial services.

After spells at Oracle, Avaya and TIAA, I joined JP Morgan Chase in 2007, where ultimately I was managing director of data and analytics. I then joined Travelers Insurance in 2014 as chief information officer of data and analytics.

In 2017, I switched to HSBC, taking up the role of group chief data officer. I left in 2020 to be interim national director of data at the NHS before joining Santander UK as chief data officer in 2021.

I joined Chubb earlier this year.

What stage has your organisation reached on its data maturity journey?

Having only just started at Chubb, we are just picking up that benchmarking exercise to compare against our peer group.

Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for

We have about 800 data professionals in the team, across data engineering, data management, data science, data privacy, MI reporting and data architecture.

What challenges do you see for data in the year ahead that will have an impact on your organisation and on the industry as a whole?

There are a number of external factors, especially cost consciousness which will drive lower internal funding available for data and analytics. The job market will also be challenging.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organisation or just the data function?

Yes, the data vision has been set to “data driven digital transformation”. This will help transform the whole organisation as we pivot to a digital-first organisation.

Have you been able to fix the data foundations of your organisation, particularly with regard to data quality?

We are on a journey, establishing key components of the tooling/platform and architecture.
