Uma Sridharan, Senior Director, Becton Dickinson

Describe your career to date

I have over 27 years of data analytics experience ranging from supply chain to revenue optimization to technology and global services and most recently digital initiatives. I’ve had a non-linear career working and leading cross-functional teams. I’m an electrical engineer by background and have been very fortunate to work with GE, Danaher and BD some of the top notch healthcare companies in different parts of the world. I have experience leading and developing people.

What stage has your organization reached on its data maturity journey?

I would say in certain areas we are game changers. In some other areas, we are in the very initial stages of assessing and making an impact.

Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for

In my role, I am responsible for a global team across three different business segments. I manage over 100+ associates and am in a place to recommend strategy and influence business decisions. My team ranges from directors to data scientists and we are spread throughout the world in North America, Asia, Europe and Latin America. I’m transitioning to a commercial analytics role where these teams will be matrixed for reporting.

What challenges do you see for data in the year ahead that will have an impact on your organization and on the industry as a whole?

Federated use of data is going to call for simple, easy to use quality data, available from source to data consumers quickly and consistently.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organization or just the data function?

The whole organization data is in scope. I believe data and people behavior/culture go hand in hand. Our goal is to strive for consistent, timely quality data in the hands of everyone that needs it.

Have you been able to fix the data foundations of your organization, particularly with regard to data quality?

In some areas, yes with solid impact. In some other areas we are on our way.
