Describe your career to date

My 20 years in data have flown by. Working as a data developer to an architect and more recently in leadership roles, it is the passion of seeing the results data and insights can bring to every industry and business working with amazing people to really drive value. The industry has continuously evolved and with the digital footprint growing through technology such as blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI); it has been a great choice of career.

My experience across Finance, Fintech, and FMCG has allowed me to work on a wide array of projects, but the standout moment for me is always when the business gets it and when employees across all functions begin to speak the same language. Excitement and momentum really builds once your foundations are in place and you drive forward with insights driven by data.

A moment I will never forget is when the founder and CEO of WorldRemit shook the hands of our ML Engineers, Data Scientists, and Engineers to thank them for a fraud detection model which significantly improved straight through processing; it is moments like those that really make this never easy but fulfilling career worthwhile.

Data literacy is a key enabler of the value and impact from data. How are you approaching this within your organisation?

Working closely with our HR team, we have developed a data literacy programme which educates all employees on the fundamentals of data, including data analysis, interpretation, and visualisation. We use Datacamp to bring the programme to life, but understand the importance of context. As we deliver new data products, the team holds regular workshops where we explain the why, what, and how and how we plan to measure success (or failure).

The concept of data champions was very new to my current organisation, but over time the relationships have flourished, and they are now leading the way as a joint partner with our literacy programme.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organisation or just the data function?

The vision for data is strongly aligned with our business strategy and objectives to become one of the leading financial brokerages in our industry. By default, it needs to embrace the whole organisation to ensure each function is served with data that is well governed but enables them to be on the offence by understanding our customer, introducing efficiencies, and ultimately increasing revenue whilst managing risk.
