Dave Mason is Chief Data Officer at Thales UK, where he leads the organisation\u2019s data and AI strategy across both enterprise and mission-critical environments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He began his career in the defence sector, developing\u00a0a strong foundation\u00a0in statistics, systems modelling and complex engineering project lifecycles. Over time, Dave progressed into senior leadership roles spanning engineering, project delivery, supply\u00a0chain\u00a0and services, consistently applying a data-centric approach to improve performance and deliver business outcomes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2019, Dave was tasked with establishing Thales UK\u2019s data team, becoming full-time Chief Data Officer in 2021. He has since scaled the function to deliver a portfolio of data and digital products used widely across the organisation. By 2025, these products were supporting two-thirds of UK employees, augmenting\u00a0decision-making\u00a0and day-to-day operations. That same year, Dave\u2019s remit expanded to include oversight of how data and AI are embedded within Thales\u2019 deployed products and systems, including assured AI within complex mission environments under the\u00a0cortAIx\u00a0framework, which is\u00a0an area that demands\u00a0a very different\u00a0approach to enterprise IT.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Thales moves into its next phase of scale, Dave is focused on integrating back-office and front-office data capabilities, alongside the responsible application of generative AI and agentic technologies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His leadership is driven by a clear motivation: delivering tangible outcomes for users by deeply understanding operational needs and enabling talented, delivery-focused teams to apply data and AI in ways that are trusted, practical and impactful.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cSuccess as a Chief Data Officer requires a diverse range of traits and skills, and I actively\u00a0seek\u00a0to develop\u00a0mine\u00a0every day. I believe many within our organisation are data and AI leaders, and recognising, mobilising, and engaging this network is essential – everyone acts as a change agent, each contributing unique strengths to our transformation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe most critical element is to inspire and align people against\u00a0a clear vision\u00a0through effective leadership and engagement. Underpinning this are important traits: inquisitiveness,\u00a0genuinely understanding people\u2019s challenges;\u00a0business-mindedness,\u00a0focusing on outcomes, not just technology;\u00a0adaptability,\u00a0embracing different routes to success;\u00a0and building trust,\u00a0ensuring the organisation is committed to the strategic roadmap.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCore skills\u00a0required\u00a0are more\u00a0evident:\u00a0expertise\u00a0in AI\u00a0and\u00a0ML, understanding technology adoption patterns, mastery of data governance,\u00a0assurance\u00a0and ethics, alongside project, operations, change management, and financial acumen.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cAs data leaders, our impact\u00a0depends on coupling technical\u00a0expertise\u00a0with strong business acumen. At the C-suite level,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0no room to remain a niche data specialist or technologist.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSuccess comes from speaking the language of business, focusing relentlessly on outcomes, and aligning our priorities with organisational\u00a0objectives. By deeply understanding our C-suite colleagues\u2019 business drivers, we ensure our data and AI strategies directly support their vision and execution. Only with this mindset do we become true partners;\u00a0fully integrated and indispensable to overall business strategy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
