Wei Manfredi is Senior Vice President of AI and Architecture at IHG Hotels & Resorts, where she leads enterprise AI and data architecture to drive large-scale transformation and competitive advantage. With more than 25 years of experience, Wei has built a career turning data complexity into business value across financial services, retail, consumer goods, and global operations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wei\u2019s career spans leadership roles at Visa, Lululemon, Google Cloud, and\u00a0Fortune\u00a0100 enterprises, where she has\u00a0operated\u00a0at the intersection of architecture, strategy, and transformation. As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cThe most dangerous belief in this field is that technical depth alone makes\u00a0a data\u00a0and AI leader. It\u00a0doesn’t. It makes a strong individual contributor. Leadership requires something harder to build and easier to underestimate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe traits that matter most, in my experience, are:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Intellectual courage. The willingness to challenge what the organization believes about its own data\u00a0(its quality, its readiness, its trustworthiness)\u00a0even when that truth is inconvenient.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Systems thinking over tool thinking.\u00a0Seeing how data, people, process, and incentives interact as a whole, not optimizing one layer while breaking another.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Communication\u00a0as\u00a0a leadership weapon. The ability to translate between engineering precision and boardroom stakes,\u00a0fluently, in both directions,\u00a0is rarer than any technical certification.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Humanity first. AI transformation fails when leaders forget that the humans navigating it matter more than the models powering it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \u201cIn my organization, the trait that has been most influential is the last one. Building a culture where people feel equipped and inspired to work alongside AI,\u00a0rather than threatened by it,\u00a0has unlocked more value than any single technology decision.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

    \u201cStudy\u00a0literature. Read philosophy. Take an improv class. Do something that has nothing to do with technology.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cThe leaders who reach the C-suite and stay there are not the ones with the deepest technical stack. They are the ones who can read a room, reframe a problem, and make a\u00a0room full of skeptical executives\u00a0feel\u00a0the urgency of something they cannot yet see.\u00a0That is a\u00a0humanities\u00a0skill. It is a storytelling skill. It is the ability to hold ambiguity without flinching and to find\u00a0the human\u00a0stakes inside a technical argument.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cMy literature background shaped how I lead more than any certification I have earned. It taught me that the most powerful systems, such as\u00a0organizations, cultures, transformations,\u00a0run on narrative,\u00a0not\u00a0logic alone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
