During a post-Guild coffee talk hosted by <\/span>Dael Williamson<\/span><\/b>, EMEA CTO at Guild’s strategic partner, <\/span>Databricks<\/span><\/b><\/a>, this dynamic was described perfectly by <\/span>Volker Buscher<\/span><\/b>, CDO and Senior Advisor, DataIQ<\/strong>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, we\u2019re seeing rockets going off all over the business\u2014but it’s not going to scale easily.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a conversation that cut to the core of a challenge that still resonates in 2025: how can CDAOs enable innovation while avoiding chaos? What does strategic AI governance look like in a world that celebrates speed, decentralisation, and experimentation?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And how do data leaders stay credible when it feels like they\u2019re not in control?<\/span> It’s a topic we started to unpack in Voice of the CDO 2024<\/a> and will closely examine at Guild 2025.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Less control. More synchronised autonomy.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Let’s be honest: data and AI leaders didn\u2019t ask for a flood of AI pilots. They mostly emerged organically\u2014through experimentation, curiosity, and business teams trying to solve real problems. That\u2019s not inherently bad. But without visibility and coordination, these pockets of activity quickly become fragmented, redundant, or even risky.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI used to run rogue experiments too,<\/em>\u201d Volker admitted. <\/span>\u201cWe gave them names like Project Beckenbauer so the CIO wouldn\u2019t spot them.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jokes aside, the point is a serious one: <\/span>fragmentation feels fast\u2014until it becomes a blocker to value.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is where the concept of <\/span>synchronised autonomy<\/strong> becomes essential. It\u2019s not about centralised command-and-control. It\u2019s about ensuring that <\/span>experimentation at the edge can align with enterprise-wide value creation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“AI at scale needs a guiding mind, a person who can deal with these complexities and help the organisation to navigate through them,<\/em>” said Volker, “Without it, <\/em><\/span>you\u2019ll feel like you’re swimming against the current and you\u2019ll wear out before you generate value.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Governance Is strategy. Culture is infrastructure.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

It’s both a technology problem and a leadership one.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSome data leaders are surprised by the attention they\u2019re now getting,\u201d<\/span><\/i> Volker observed. <\/span>\u201cBut they also need to ask themselves\u2014am I ready for this moment?\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To be effective, CDAOs must operate across three domains:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Architecture<\/span><\/b> \u2013 ensuring the right data infrastructure exists to support experimentation <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> scale.<\/span>\u00a0\n

    <\/span><\/li>\n

  2. Governance<\/span><\/b> \u2013 not just compliance, but intentional decision-making about <\/span>where<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>how<\/span><\/i> to invest in AI.<\/span>\u00a0\n

    <\/span><\/li>\n

  3. Culture<\/span><\/b> \u2013 helping teams understand that fast doesn\u2019t mean siloed, and experimentation doesn\u2019t mean isolation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    As Dael noted, this moment requires technical leaders to step into organisational design roles:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u201cIf your AI and your data are separate, the only use cases you\u2019ll ever build are static\u2014and the business is dynamic by nature.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    The CDAO as enabler of AI-first thinking<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

    There\u2019s a lot of pressure right now to show AI progress. Boards are asking. So are investors. But speed without direction leads to misalignment\u2014and missed opportunity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The most effective CDAOs today are not saying \u201cno\u201d to GenAI enthusiasm. They\u2019re saying:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/span>Yes\u2014and let\u2019s connect it to the bigger picture.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    They\u2019re mapping the business relationships, the value flows, and the operational models that allow intelligent experimentation without organisational entropy. And they\u2019re stepping up as <\/span>strategic enablers, not gatekeepers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    This is exactly the conversation that will unfold at Guild 2025.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

    We\u2019ll explore how leaders are coordinating AI investments, building cross-functional trust, and creating systems that scale value\u2014not just noise.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
