Secondment will involve induction and technical training, as well as support, with the ability to work part-time, in job shares or swaps and remotely if appropriate. All individuals continue to work under the employment terms of their parent company, but under confidentiality, with funding either fully by the ICO, fully by the employer, or a blend of both. Applications can be made here.
The move is part of an attempt to solve the Office’s staffing issues with informed sources telling DataIQ that it has seen 25% of its policy staff poached by commercial organisations in seven months. Secondment could help to reverse that flow.
At the same time, the ICO is leading a cross-industry working party which is looking at developing simple, consistent GDPR messaging which can be used by organisations of all sizes. Initially brought together by Barclays with the assistance of DataIQ, the intention is to identify clear and simple ways of explaining new rights which will become familiar to consumers through being adopted by multiple brands.
Speaking at Ctrl-Shift’s PIE 2017 event yesterday, Steve Wood, deputy commissioner with responsibility for policy at the ICO, said: “Transparency is at the heart of GDPR with more user-centric terms. So we are leading a consortium that includes Barclays, the BBC and Sainsbury’s, to agree a common set of core messages for consumers that can then be tailored by each organisation so consumers don’t become confused. Consumers have 100 data relationships on average - ideally, they could all use a common language.”
