London, 1 October 2020: DataIQ, the leading membership business for connecting, educating and supporting the data and analytics community, recognised industry excellence at its 2020 awards held yesterday.
Hosted in partnership with Tableau and delivered virtually, the awards honoured outstanding individuals, teams and organisations in the data industry across 26 categories.
The coveted data and analytics leader of the year went to Nicola Klein, Chief Data Officer at Direct Line Group on the client-side. At the same time, Alan Grogan, Data and AI Lead at Avanade and Accenture, won the award as an enabler.
In a year when the travel sector is being severely impacted, Riviera Travel’s insight team scooped the Data and analytics team of the year, with Mango Solutions team being awarded the same accolade on the vendor side.
NatWest Group scooped this year’s Grand Prix Award, having also won the award for Best development programme. As well as being the first UK bank to introduce a data academy, the judges were also impressed with its holistic perspective in delivering this. Its dual approach not only focuses on up-skilling practitioners and new starters with technical skills but also critical people skills to develop well-rounded individuals.
Meanwhile, The Professor Derek Holder Lifetime Achievement Award went to Dr. Sachiko Scheuing, European privacy officer at Acxiom. This is in recognition of Dr. Scheuing’s long-term commitment to raising standards across the data industry, much of her work happening behind the scenes. Scheuing has become someone with real influence in European data protection. Her representation on behalf of marketing data owners in Brussels during lobbying around GDPR being critical in ameliorating the potential industry-ending first draft of the regulations, resulting in the balanced rules that came into being.
For the second year in a row, Aviva’s Customer Science Team were recipients of the Best Place to Work in Data Award. Meanwhile, the newly introduced awards for Best use of data by a not-for-profit organisation went to The Open University for its OUAnalyse project which is piloting machine-learning based methods to improve student retention and performance.
"This has been a turbulent year for everyone, so more than ever it is important we recognise the exceptional work happening across our industry and honour those who are making a real difference", said Adrian Gregory, CEO at DataIQ.
"We received a record number of submissions this year, and the growth in entries for our Data for Good category is particularly telling. Today, the application of data is going beyond marketing departments and boardrooms and increasingly impacting many areas of society. Congratulations to all this year’s winners, and thank you to our sponsors – Tableau, GSK, WarnerMedia, Code Worldwide and the DM Trust - and everyone who celebrated online with us last night."
