Sigma Labs is challenging conventional routes into data and AI careers by identifying potential rather than pedigree. More than 160 consultants have completed its training, over 80% have been rated as top-quartile performers by clients, and all 12 participants placed at EY, despite previously being rejected from its graduate scheme, and were rated ‘Exceeding Expectations’ or ‘Outstanding’.  

For Sigma Labs, the data and AI talent shortage and the UK’s social mobility challenge are not separate problems. Its premise is that talented graduates are being overlooked because traditional recruitment processes place too much weight on signals such as university background and internship experience. At the same time, organisations need people equipped for a rapidly changing, AI-enabled workplace. 

Its goal is to place 1,000 people from low-income backgrounds into high-performing data and technology careers by 2030. 

 

Identifying Potential, Not Pedigree 

Rather than screening candidates by university or previous internships, Sigma Labs uses a proprietary assessment designed to identify potential across different backgrounds. 

Its methodology draws on interviews with 4,000 technologists about the characteristics associated with high performance, including conscientiousness, coachability, and proactivity. 

Successful candidates undertake a free 16-week programme covering the data and AI stack alongside a Professional High Performance curriculum. A ratio of one coach to seven trainees provides personalised support before participants move into two-year contracts with enterprise organisations.

The clearest demonstration comes from EY. All 12 Sigma Labs consultants placed there had previously been rejected from EY’s graduate scheme. Following their training, every person was rated ‘Exceeding Expectations’ or ‘Outstanding’.

Preparing Talent for an AI-Native Workplace 

Social mobility only improves sustainably if training reflects the skills employers need. Recognising the growing role of AI in software development, Sigma Labs began rebuilding its curriculum around an AI-native model in 2025. 

The challenge was to teach trainees to use AI without sacrificing technical competence. Training progresses from conversational AI through generative coding to agentic tools, while requiring participants to understand and defend everything they produce. Weekly, trainees undertake PhD viva-style sessions in which they must explain their projects and code. 

Sigma Labs developed an AI tool to analyse job-market data and identify emerging skills demand, while curriculum changes are A/B tested against trainee outcomes. Participants following the new curriculum completed case studies 19% faster than traditionally trained peers and delivered 3.5 times more features on open-ended projects, while maintaining stable code complexity scores. 

 

Making Social Impact Sustainable 

Sigma Labs’ model is designed to continue beyond initial training. Once placed, graduates receive monthly one-to-one coaching, high-performance mindset support, and a £500 annual certification allowance. 

The programme is funded through client contracts, allowing trainees to participate for free. As a B Corp, Sigma Labs reinvests profits into education, connecting commercial growth directly to expansion of its social mission. 

There are signs that employer perceptions are changing. Client manager NPS increased from 54% promoters in Q2 2025 to 69% in Q4, with zero detractors recorded. 

Sigma Labs challenges the fundamental assumption about the data and AI talent pipeline that past opportunity is the best predictor of future potential. By combining alternative assessment, intensive development, AI-native skills, and continued career support, it is demonstrating that candidates overlooked by conventional recruitment can become high-performing data and AI professionals.
