Ranil Boteju, Chief Data and Analytics Officer, Lloyds Banking Group

Describe your career to date

I have 25 years’ global experience transforming businesses and creating value with advanced analytics, data and machine learning (ML) product delivery, and data commercialisation. I have held senior leadership roles at top tier organisations including the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Vodafone, Standard Chartered Bank, and HSBC. I am currently the Group Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Lloyds Banking Group. Helping Britain prosper is our Bank’s purpose and enabling this very inspiring mission with data and artificial intelligence (AI) is my goal. I am the accountable Executive for delivering the Bank’s Data and ML Strategy. I also serve as a Non-Executive Director at the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK’s independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.

How are you developing the data literacy of your organisation, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders?

Data culture is one of core pillars of the data strategy, with an aspiration to become the most data literate bank in the world. We have a strong focus on upskilling data practitioners as well as business colleagues with relevant data and analytics skills and have a dedicated data literacy team set up for the purpose.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organisation or just the data function?

The purpose of Lloyds Banking Group is to help Britain prosper. My vision is to supercharge this purpose with data and AI, so helping Britain prosper with data and AI is my vision for data. At Lloyds Banking Group, we have one of the richest, deepest data sets in the world, relationships with 50% of the population, and a Board and CEO that really believe in the power of data and AI. Guided by our purpose, I feel there is a tremendous opportunity to leverage data in service of our customers and UK society. It is the reason I joined Lloyds Banking Group.
