Alex Sidgreaves, Chief Data Officer, Zurich Insurance

In 2005, after completing a programming degree, I began my career at Zurich Insurance as an MI Analyst, marking the start of my journey in data. By the early 2010s, I led the transformation of the UK data team, turning it into a robust data function with formal processes and diverse expertise. I then spearheaded the DataOps area, insourcing data capabilities and creating an in-house data platform for the P&C business, all within an agile framework.

My next role was in data architecture, where I established a practice that embedded essential data concepts and processes within the organisation. Subsequently, as the Head of Data, I oversaw the entire UK data landscape, leading a second transformative phase that consolidated UK data into a central estate. This role required a strategic vision and the ability to build strong relationships across the business, crucial for the success of this award-winning transformation.

Since 2022, as the UK Chief Data Officer, my focus has been on driving value, innovation, and growth across the organisation while supporting the broader UK strategy. Strengthening the collaboration between data and business functions, I have implemented a new operating model and modernised the tech landscape, fostering a seamless integration between business and data. My work has set a data strategy standard within the Zurich group, with elements adopted across the wider organisation, and I have championed the implementation of intelligent automation and AI.
