Abhi Seth, Chief Data and Analytics Officer, Boeing

Describe your career to date

I am Chief Data and Analytics Officer and Vice President of Analytics for Boeing’s Information Technology and Data Analytics function, responsible for the oversight of global data strategy, analytics platforms, and enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. I have a track record of leading analytics modernization and delivering value in a variety of roles across multiple industries in the United States and across Asia.

Prior to Boeing, I held senior executive positions with TE Connectivity, Honeywell International and Caterpillar Inc. As Chief Data Officer for TE Connectivity, I was responsible for data and platform strategy, AI innovation and technology, and was pivotal in directing value-driven analytics transformation on a global scale.

At Honeywell, I established the first analytics center of excellence and led connected aircraft strategy, building and monetizing AI offerings for airline customers. My team also developed enterprise AI deployments that created value for supply chain improvement, manufacturing production, sales and pricing functions.

At Caterpillar, I held several roles within research and development, business strategy, and information analytics, leading the development of AI solutions for Caterpillar’s mining, construction, and marine customers.

I am an expert advisor at the International Institute for Analytics (IIA) and have received several notable accolades for his work, including the IIA ANNY – Excellence in Analytics Award (2018), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Young Engineer of the Year Award (2011).

How are you developing the data literacy of your organization, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders?

We have established a data literacy and governance program. The newly formed global data governance and literacy organization is leading the charge and has created different training programs that are being rolled out enterprise wide.

What role do you play in building and delivering conventional AI solutions, including machine learning models? Are you involved in your organization’s adoptions of generative AI?

We have a fairly large AI team and have set up a generative AI (genAI) center of excellence in 2023. My team has created our first few genAI conversational assistants that have already rolled out to teams across Boeing.

We are currently actively involved in building several Boeing-specific genAI solutions that will create immense value in our core processes. We have created a genAI academy which has several hundred graduates championing the use of genAI every day and creating new examples of how it drives innovation and productivity.

What are the key challenges to your data function that you are facing as its leader?

Boeing is a vast global complex organization with over a hundred years of history. The biggest challenge we have as a company is driving convergence in data systems and bringing distributed sources of data together and driving a platform driven approach to AI and analytics where we can drive re-use of data and AI and are able to scale AI and genAI applications across our global team.
