Abhishek Khandelwal, Managing Director, Chief Analytics Officer, Barclays UK

Describe your career to date

I am the Managing Director and Chief Analytics Officer at Barclays UK, where I lead the analytics strategy and transformation across the retail and business banking segments. I have been with Barclays UK since 2012 and have held various roles in business banking and advanced analytics, as well as unsecured business analytics. I have driven the growth and innovation of the SME and corporate banking products and services, and overseen credit risk, marketing, and customer analytics for the personal loans, overdrafts, and credit cards portfolios. Before joining Barclays UK, I worked at Lloyds Banking Group and Barclaycard, where I developed and implemented analytical solutions for customer acquisition, retention, and profitability in the credit card industry. I started my career at ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, where I managed the business intelligence and reporting functions for the sales and distribution channels. I hold a Bachelor of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

How are you developing the data literacy of your organisation, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders?

At Barclays UK, we are committed to developing the data literacy of our organisation, including the skills of our data teams and business stakeholders. We work as trusted partners to the business, consulting on problems and using our range of analytical skills to find the best approach, rather than simply providing data. For our business stakeholders, we have implemented the Data Eagles programme, which trains individuals on key skills to use data effectively to drive decisions. This programme has been rolled out to the entirety of Barclays UK, increasing self-serving and data democratisation. For our data professionals, we have an extensive Learning and Development programme that focuses on developing both technical analytical skills and consultancy skills. This ensures that all work delivers change, impact, and drives decision-making. By investing in the development of data literacy, we are empowering our colleagues to make informed decisions and drive innovation.

What are the key challenges to your data function that you are facing as its leader?

As a leader in the data function, some of the key challenges that I face include ensuring data quality and accuracy, managing the volume and complexity of data, keeping up with rapidly evolving technology and analytical methods, and ensuring data security and privacy. With the ever-changing environment, my focus is fostering a culture where colleagues are comfortable with change and are able to continuously learn and adapt to different ways of solving problems, including by harnessing new technology and techniques. When combined with fostering a data-driven culture, promoting data literacy, and effectively communicating insights and their business impact to stakeholders, this ability to constantly adapt is essential for us being an effective analytics function within the bank.
