Aimee Smith, Director of Data, Metropolitan Police

I have spent almost 25 years in the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). I started in 2001 as an Intelligence Analyst, with further roles in the Paedophile Unit and Covert Intelligence. By 2014, I was leading the UK Policing’s largest Confidential Intelligence Unit.

After attending the Police Strategic Command Course, I saw a gap in Policing’s consideration of the importance of data management to operational decision-making. I was privileged to spearhead the MPS data transformation programme. As the first Director of Data for the MPS, I established the inaugural Data Office in law enforcement in 2019.

I am Co-chair of the National Police Data and Analytics Board and lead initiatives on Data across all police forces. After years of campaigning with fellow SMEs, the Home Office are now funding the creation of a permeant National Data and Analytics Office for policing.
