Ali Keshavarz, President, Data and Analytics, CVS Health

Describe your career to date

I drive the enterprise data strategy, focused on making high-quality, integrated, and real-time data and insights easily accessible through a modern architecture. My team tackles complex challenges at the intersection of technology and health care by utilizing advanced analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, modeling, and a hypothesis-driven approach. The objective is to swiftly transform data into actionable insights that are customer-centric, driving growth, improving health outcomes, and enhancing access to health care across all CVS Health businesses.

I collaborate with leaders from various business units to create and implement cutting-edge data solutions that revolutionize their operations and help them surpass their performance goals.

Before joining CVS Health, I was a leader in McKinsey’s healthcare analytics and customer analytics practices. I hold an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BA in mathematics from Northwestern University.

How are you developing the data literacy of your organization, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders?

Developing the data literacy of our organization is a top priority. We recognize the importance of equipping our data teams and business stakeholders with the necessary skills to effectively leverage data. To achieve this, we have implemented fun and engaging training in the most sought-after technical skills and programming languages. These programs aim to deliver career and role-based learning paths aligned to technical career tracks, roles and skills, while supporting colleague growth and development. We encourage colleagues to stay updated with the latest advancements in data analytics through industry conferences and certifications.

In addition to our data teams, we understand the significance of fostering data literacy among our business stakeholders. We have recently joined our digital and technology partners to become a single organization, Digital, Data and Analytics, and Technology (DDAT). Becoming one team has enabled us to create joint priorities. It also simplifies our interactions with colleagues within our business units and allows us to make more impact. As an integrated DDAT organization, we are more efficient and effective from a planning perspective and more tightly coordinated.

What role do you play in building and delivering conventional artificial intelligence solutions, including machine learning models? Are you also involved in your organization’s adoption of generative AI?

Artificial intelligence (AI) presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform healthcare and empower individuals to live healthier lives. To ensure the responsible and safe utilization of AI, we have established robust guardrails and policies.

As one of the original signatories of a voluntary health sector commitment aligning ourselves with the ongoing efforts of the White House to promote responsible, safe, secure, and trustworthy use of AI in health care. We are also a founding partner of the Coalition for Health AI, an organization that is convening leaders and experts to establish a trusted source of responsible AI use in health care.

My team is leading CVS Health in applying technology, data, and analytics across all aspects of our business to simplify health care, make it more convenient, affordable, and accessible.  Our team is dedicated to implementing responsible strategies for the creation and deployment of AI and machine learning technologies.
