Andrew Burns is Global Head of Data Strategy at National Grid, where he leads the development and execution of a group-wide data agenda spanning innovation, governance and capability. Recognised in the DataIQ 2024 Future Leaders List, he has played a central role in strengthening National Grid’s data foundations and positioning data as a driver of enterprise-wide transformation.
Since 2022, Andrew has owned the organisation’s global data strategy, alongside oversight of the data innovation agenda and data innovation lab. Under his leadership, National Grid has progressed towards a more consistent, group-wide approach to data, including the introduction of standardised role definitions and a structured learning and development framework to professionalise the data community.
His work has contributed to wider organisational recognition, including National Grid receiving the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Data Award at the 2024 DataIQ Awards and Best Data and AI Team at the DataIQ Awards North America 2025.
Previously, as Head of Customer Data and Systems, Andrew was responsible for the design and management of customer and stakeholder data domains across the UK business, as well as the redesign of global stakeholder engagement systems. Earlier roles in insight and analytics further broadened his experience across governance, strategy and technology.
Andrew is particularly committed to building diverse, high-performing data teams and fostering a culture of innovation. Alongside his executive responsibilities, he is an active mentor and advocate for continuous professional development within the data community.
