Ashina Buddu, Global Head of Business Intelligence and Data Analytics, Anglo American

Ashina Buddu is a seasoned Process Engineer with a career spanning both technical leadership and general management within the mining industry. She thrives on analysing complex systems, identifying constraints, and unlocking performance through debottlenecking, whether through physical redesign, process optimisation, automation, or AI.

Having spent a significant portion of her career in technical process management, Ashina later transitioned into overseeing processing plant operations, gaining a broad perspective on organisational performance and value drivers. This experience laid the foundation for her move into digital technologies, where she now focuses on bridging the gap between operational execution and digital innovation.

Her current work centres on integrating automation and AI into the core processes that power the business. By aligning technology with operational objectives, she enables safer, more efficient, and more adaptive systems. She approaches digital transformation as an operational imperative rather than as a technology project, ensuring that every solution is grounded in process logic and delivers measurable impact.

DataIQ asked: “How do you see the role of the data leader evolving over the next 12-24 months?”

As we move beyond foundational AI into the era of agentic AI, data leaders must evolve their focus. Traditional capabilities, such as robust data platforms, scalable analytics, and automation, are now table stakes. The next frontier is enabling intelligent systems that proactively engage with humans, make autonomous decisions, and adapt in real time.

“Leading this transition requires more than technical depth; it demands a leadership mindset centred on people, purpose, and change. The data leader of the future must act as a strategic integrator bridging technology with culture, fostering trust in AI systems, and enabling new ways of working.

“Success will depend on our ability to drive adoption, inspire confidence, and ensure that human-AI collaboration delivers lasting value across the organisation.”
