Bharat Tripathi, Head, Data Platforms and Engineering, National Grid USA

Describe your career to date

I am responsible for providing data and analytics platform services to all business units. I am also responsible for delivering data and analytics products for various business units within National Grid, including data management, data engineering, machine learning, business intelligence, data governance, and data operations.

Before joining National Grid, I held data and analytics Leadership roles in various organizations, including Dunkin Brands, Manthan (now Algonomy), Target, Wipro, and Travelers Insurance, where I oversaw data and analytics transformation and managed an extensive data and analytics organization portfolio. I managed business intelligence and analytics, data science, data, and machine learning engineering, data governance, and data operations teams.

Throughout my career, I have been passionate about data and analytics, data science, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, and enabling data and cloud transformations. I have an MBA from Boston University and a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering from Netaji Subash University of Technology, Delhi.

How are you developing the data literacy of your organization, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders? 

We took the following steps to develop data literacy within our organization:  

  1. Training and education: Provided training programs and workshops to enhance data literacy skills. We offer courses on data analysis, data visualization, data management, and other relevant topics.  

  1. Internal knowledge sharing: Established forums and communities of practice to share best practices, and insights related to data.  

  1. Data governance and documentation: Implemented data governance practices to ensure data quality, consistency, and accessibility.  

  1. Collaboration and cross-functional teams: Increased collaboration between data teams and business stakeholders. Fostered cross-functional teams where data experts work closely with business professionals to solve problems and make data-driven decisions. 

  1. Continuous learning and support: Established a culture of continuous learning and provide ongoing support for employees to enhance their data literacy skills. Provided all required resources to data teams, such as online tutorials, books, and access to relevant tools and software. 

What role do you play in building and delivering conventional artificial intelligence solutions, including machine learning models? Are you also involved in your organization’s adoption of generative AI?  

Our team is responsible for provided all the tools and technologies to build and deliver AI and machine learning solutions. 

What stage has your organization reached on its data maturity journey? 

We are currently at the proactive stage of our data maturity journey, where we have become more intentional and systematic in managing data. We have established formal data governance structures, developed data standards, and invested in data and analytics infrastructure and tools. Data-driven decision-making is pervasive in the organization.
