Craig Lescher is Data and AI Governance Director at Sidley Austin LLP, where he leads the firm’s approach to data governance and responsible AI adoption. With over a decade of experience in the insurance industry prior to moving into legal services, he brings a risk-aware, commercially grounded perspective to the design and execution of governance frameworks.
Since joining Sidley Austin, Craig has established and operationalized a firm-wide data governance program, including the creation of an Enterprise Data Council, the development of enterprise data standards, and the implementation of governance tooling such as Collibra and Databricks. He has also authored and implemented responsible AI product review processes and contributed to shaping contractual guidance around AI use, reflecting an increasing need to balance innovation with regulatory and reputational considerations.
Craig’s role extends beyond governance design into execution and interim leadership across adjacent areas, including marketing technology and product management within finance. This breadth reflects a pragmatic approach, embedding governance within real operational contexts rather than treating it as a standalone function.
Prior to Sidley Austin, Craig spent over 11 years at Allstate, most recently as Data Strategy Governance Senior Manager, where he developed and matured governance capabilities within a large, complex organization.
Craig’s approach is rooted in the belief that governance should enable. He focuses on increasing the value of data, improving data literacy, and creating clear ownership across the business, ensuring that governance frameworks support both control and meaningful use.
