Johanna Hutchinson, Group Chief Data Officer, BAE Systems

Johanna Hutchinson is Group Chief Data Officer at BAE Systems, with a distinguished record of delivering enterprise-scale data and AI transformation across highly regulated, mission-critical environments. Appointed to this newly created role in August 2023, she leads enterprise data, analytics and AI from BAE Systems’ global headquarters, reporting to the Chief Technology and Innovation Officer. Her remit focuses on strengthening operational performance, resilience and strategic decision-making across a 90,000-strong workforce within a FTSE 50 manufacturing organisation.

Before joining BAE Systems, Johanna spent over a decade in government, where she led major data transformations and built national data and analytics capabilities to support decision-making at the highest levels. Most notably, she led the UK’s COVID-19 data and analytics response, delivering insight under intense public and political scrutiny. Many of the metrics that became part of everyday language during the pandemic, including the R-value, prevalence curves, travel corridors and roadmaps out of lockdown, were developed within her directorate.

Her work also included establishing wastewater surveillance programmes to detect disease at community level and designing the National Biosurveillance Network, enabling the rapid mobilisation of insight across government in the event of national security incidents.

Johanna holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Liverpool and believes that training in behavioural science provides a powerful foundation for effective data leadership. She has been recognised as DataIQ Number One in 2025 and named among the Top 100 Global Data Leaders, reflecting her impact on the field of data and AI at enterprise and national scale.

As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?

“Understanding the organisational culture and the ‘real’ drivers, not necessarily what is written in the corporate strategy. Be prepared to repeat, repeat, and repeat, not until a concept is recognised and accepted will be it be adopted.”

Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?

“You can only work at the pace that the organisations will allow you to. Fighting against it is often futile and doesn’t lead to your personal success.”
