Maria Vounou, Director, Data Science, Burberry

Driven by a passion for mathematics, statistics, and analytical problem-solving, I dedicated my academic pursuits to this field, culminating in a PhD in Statistics providing me with invaluable hands-on experience in data analytics while conducting research on high-dimensional brain imaging and genetic data. 

I grew my career in Burberry joining as a Data Scientist and I immediately got excited about the endless possibilities of embedding data in a creative-led organisation. I played a pivotal part in setting up the technical foundations, building a high performing team, and expanding the data footprint and impact across Burberry. 

As a Director, I run the central, globally focused, Data and Analytics department, leading a team of talented data scientists, analysts, and data product managers, and responsible for the effective exploitation of data across all areas.  

I am proud to have been listed in DataIQ100 2024 and for my team to have been recognised with multiple awards including Best Data and Analytics Team at the 2023 DataIQ Awards as well as Data-Enabling Solution of the Year and Innovation Champion at the 2024 DataIQ Awards.
