Martin Aylward, Head of Data and Tech, EDF Energy

After early roles at the Medical Research Council and American Express, I moved to Royal & Sun Alliance where I joined the global digital leadership initiative at the peak of the dot.com boom, which led to me getting a job in the fledgling ecommerce team and a lead role in the creation of MORE TH>N. It was in this role that I cut my teeth on all things digital and data.  

I moved to EDF Energy where I headed up the acquisition and then the customer marketing teams, taking a lead role in re-launching the brand and building the direct and digital marketing capability. Then I led EDF’s Smart Metering Programme which spanned digital, IT, data, operations, marketing, and physical assets building a key part of the UK’s net zero infrastructure. 

In 2021 I began leading EDF’s data teams in a newly set up Data and CRM Centre of Excellence which transformed EDF’s data capability and data value delivered. My current role is heading up the Data and Tech teams in our energy trading business, trading c.£10bn of energy a year, helping balance the National Grid and providing a route to market for renewable energy.
