Moez Hassan, Chief Data Officer, Royal Caribbean Group

Describe your career to date

My career has been a combination of various roles in the data space that has enabled me to become a versatile leader. I align data and artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives with business objectives, translate complex technical concepts into relatable business phrasing, and craft effective data and analytics strategies.

How are you developing the data literacy of your organization, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders?

I have taken a balanced approach to data literacy where several of its facets are activated. For example, this includes establishing centers of excellence responsible for continuously engaging the data and analytics community with internal and external training and relevant topics. It also includes a data stewardship program as part of the data governance platform we established to create champions across the business and drive initiatives around data privacy, sharing, and quality.

What role do you play in building and delivering conventional artificial intelligence solutions, including machine learning models? Are you also involved in your organization’s adoption of generative AI?

I am involved in identifying and prioritizing machine learning and AI business solutions based on the value and the urgency of the solution and the oversight and communication. in addition, I am involved with the setting the vision for generative AI (genAI) as well as the technical capabilities and the governance aspects.

What are the key challenges to your data function that you are facing as its leader?

We have taken a balanced approach of working on business solutions that generate clear business value while working on long term transformational initiatives that aim at establishing a solid data foundation to expedite and scale the value from data, analytics, and AI. We are at a pivotal point where the efforts around platform modernization, data quality improvements, and data consolidation are all progressing at a high speed while the demand for business solutions is increasing – especially with the popularity of genAI. This combination is putting a lot of strain on the teams and putting more importance on being ultra diligent in prioritizing initiatives.
