Tom Henry, Chief Data and Deputy Chief Information Officer, Schnuck Markets, Inc.

Describe your career to date

I am a member of Schnuck Markets, Inc.’s Strategy Team, leading the company’s Data and Analytics organization. My mission is to construct and maintain a purpose-built information management environment, governed and utilized by teammates at all levels of the enterprise, where trusted and increasingly intelligent insights are produced.

My current focus is to help deliver the corporation’s commitment to “Nourish People’s Lives” by producing smart, data-driven store operations, a more intelligent end-to-end supply chain and personalized customer experiences.

Prior to joining Schnucks, I served as Chief Data Officer at Express Scripts, where I led the enterprise analytics strategy to embed accurate, timely, actionable business insights into the Express Scripts decision-making process. The strategy centered on modernizing and enhancing the enterprise’s data management and insight production capabilities. As a result, Express Scripts was able to master the production of customer and department level descriptive insights, while creating new predictive and cognitive artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for the corporation.

In addition to his role at Schnucks, I currently hold the following volunteer positions:

  • University of Missouri Data Science and Analytics, Industry Advisory Board (Chairman)

  • Washington University Center for Analytics and Business Insights (CABI) Board

  • Global CDO Ambassador State of Missouri, USA (Issued by MIT CDOIQ, is CDO, The Institute for Chief Data Officers, and CDO Magazine)

  • Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) – National Vice President

How are you developing the data literacy of your organization, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders?

I work with a world-class team of engineers, analysts, mathematicians, and data scientists to inform the organization’s data driven decisions. Me and my team have developed and lead the delivery of a multi-year enterprise data and analytics strategy.

My team’s strategic vision is to help the organization “Nourish People’s Lives” by delivering innovative data, analytics, and software solutions that give a strategic sales advantage, while equipping teammates with the tools and insights they need to succeed.

In 2024, my team will leverage our purpose-built technology ecosystem, governed, and utilized by teammates throughout the enterprise, to produce trusted and increasingly intelligent analytics solutions and actionable insights.

What role do you play in building and delivering conventional AI solutions, including machine learning models? Are you involved in your organization’s adoptions of generative AI?

I am responsible for both the strategic planning and execution of the Schnuck organization’s discriminative and generative AI strategies. This includes responsibility for everything from data architecture, engineering, and governance to the design, delivery, and maintenance of the organization’s AI assets.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organization or just the data function?

My strategic vision – and that of my team – is to help colleagues embody their mission to “Nourish People’s Lives” by delivering innovative data, analytics, and software solutions. This is supplemented by providing actionable insights for customer acquisition and retention, as well as teammate engagement. This vision aligns with the corporate purpose statement and is embraced by teammates at all levels of the enterprise.
