Vijay Akella, Chief Data Officer, U.S. Bank

Describe your career to date

I am a global executive with strategy and technology experience in managing the end-to-end lifecycle of a data business.  I have over two decades of experience in the fast-paced world of data and analytics, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, cloud, and data engineering technologies. I have delivered customer centric data and analytics solutions to drive revenue and operational efficiencies at global organizations.

How are you developing the data literacy of your organization, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders?

Data literacy is the ability to read, write, and communicate with data in context – in both work and life. We are taking a top-down and bottom-up approach with a grass-roots movement balanced with leadership support from multiple domains and divisions. We are committed to fostering data literacy across the organization by training, supporting, and unlocking radical collaboration and innovation using data.

What role do you play in building and delivering conventional artificial intelligence solutions, including machine learning models? Are you also involved in your organization’s adoption of generative AI?

At U.S. Bank, I lead a passionate team of experts across data engineering, data product management, design, strategy, and innovation. We are very tightly aligned with our business partners. Together, we help power the strategic goals of the business through AI, machine learning, and big data.

How are you preparing your organization for AI adoption and change management?

Use of AI and machine learning is ubiquitous at U.S. Bank, with many different areas of our company leveraging its benefits to enhance how we do business. We have actively invested in AI and machine learning capabilities during the past few years so we can improve customer and employee experiences with U.S. Bank.

Our AI capabilities are built on a strong foundation of innovation, governance and partnerships throughout the organization. In a highly regulated environment like banking, it is critical that we determine the appropriate use cases for AI, establish the necessary technology to handle the required data and workload and ensure a proper risk framework is in place. A robust Change management process is crucial to help organizations adapt to AI.
