Zachery Anderson, Chief Data and Analytics Officer, NatWest Group

Describe your career to date

I have over 20 years of analytics and data science experience. I joined NatWest Group as Chief Data and Analytics Officer in 2020 and I lead the bank’s Data Management, Data Science, and Data Engineering teams. In my role, I am responsible for setting the banks data, artificial intelligence (AI) and personalisation strategy. I am lucky to be highly regarded by academics and executives for my thought leadership and ability to transform organisations through the creation of a data driven culture which focuses on delivering value for customers. Additionally, I am a faculty member of the Wharton Aresty Institute of Executive Education. Prior to joining NatWest Group, I was at Electronic Arts (EA) where I built the Global Analytics and Insights function and the customer data platform. My work there has been highlighted in the Harvard Business Review and the MIT Sloan Management Review.

Data literacy is a key enabler of the value and impact from data. How are you approaching this within your organisation?

A data-first mindset is ensuring data is a part of everyone’s daily activities – from accumulation and accuracy through to informing key decisions – this is at the core of NatWest’s strategy. At NatWest, we were the first UK retail bank to launch a Data Academy which has taken an integrated approach to refreshing technical and soft skills incorporating gamification, self-led, classroom, and supported experiential learning via our gig marketplace.

How are you preparing your organisation for AI adoption and change management?

Generative AI (genAI) is helping us evolve experiences, delivering customer and business value. We are developing an ongoing portfolio of genAI use cases for delivery, aligned to business goals. Our first ten prioritised use cases are focusing on five patterns for repeatable AI solution designs that will leverage the strengths of genAI. We are exploring use cases that will target both the colleague and customer experience.
