Skills shortages across UK data teams have been well-documented in recent years, which is why Imperial College Business School and Corndel have created a new suite of skills development programmes geared specifically to address the needs of the industry. The programmes’ launch comes amid high demand for data skills as well as a recent warning about a stagnation of vital skills from the Learning & Work Institute, with investment in training spend per employee falling 28% in real terms since 2005 to a level less than half the EU average.
Two programmes, the data-driven professional programme and the data analyst programme, will be launched in September 2022. The former course enables professions across core business functions (HR, marketing, finance and operations) to improve data literacy and improve their capabilities surrounding the use of organisational data and business intelligence. The latter course is more specialised and enables professionals to prepare and analyse large quantities of data as well as building predictive tools to utilise machine learning, AI and data science.
“Strategic, impactful and scalable data skills are increasingly critical for business performance and the economy at large,” said David Brown, director of executive education at Imperial College Business School. “Imperial College Business School is delighted to expand our partnership in this major initiative to address the UK’s data skills gap. We help individuals translate learning into practice and make a difference immediately. We will be able to deliver critical business skills development at speed and scale.”
The new offerings utilise a digital curriculum and allow participants to study around their careers, join online seminars and attend masterclass sessions led by Imperial academics and industry figures.
Prospective participants can use the UK Government’s Apprenticeship Levy, which supports employers in providing workplace training for staff in order to boost skills in areas such as leadership, management, data skills and project management. The Apprenticeship Levy is a tax, paid by employers with a bill of £3 million or more, specifically used to fund workplace training and has supported more than 313,000 people in their data skills journey. Companies paying the Apprenticeship Levy have finances set aside for training employees, which can be accessed through a gov.uk digital account.
