Organisations must ensure that employees across the enterprise have an understanding and appreciation of how data can support their processes, and Coventry Building Society has exemplified this with its data academy. The judging panel was impressed with the integrated approach that Coventry Building Society brought to the organisation which supported a range of skills across different teams, furthering a data-first mindset.
In November 2023, Coventry Building Society launched its data academy and in that short time more than 600 team members have been provided with tailored data learning paths, and a structured nine-month programme has been supplied to 100 of these learners. This was based on data personas, of which four were identified:
- Data Sceptic: Those who do not feel comfortable with data or are unsure how it fits into their role (3%).
- Data Dreamer: Those who use data and can see the benefits of how it can help, but not sure what to do next (61%).
- Data Knight: Those who are on a quest for more data knowledge. They undertake some data activities with confidence but can see more potential on the horizon (31%).
- Data Wizard: Those who are comfortable with all aspects of data management and insight, with high skill levels (5%).
Engagement was encouraged via a supermarket sweep-themed gameshow concept called DataPlace Sweep which helped bring the concepts of data governance to life. This was also done to increase awareness of the data academy and to highlight the importance of data governance to all areas of the organisation. Over 700 colleagues took part in 24 iterations of the game with post-event online learning developed to continue the ability to improve their understanding of data governance.
