DataIQ Awards 2020 winner - Privacy and trust champion: J Cromack

J firmly believes that human-centric data which has been authenticated by trusted individuals is a must-have for positive outcomes. If trust in data is lost, value is lost, leading to reduced incomes and curtailed innovation. To back up this view, in 2014 he co-founded MyLife Digital, a human-centric organisation putting individuals at the heart of their information.

He helped to design the tools MyLife Digital has built to empower individuals in decisions and give them control over the use of their data – who it can be shared with, for what purpose, and what their preferences are, creating a more authentic, trusted and valuable dataset for both the individual and the organisations their data is shared with.

The MLDF platform has over 35 million users and has been implemented by major brands, including a top three energy firm, UNICEF, First Trains, Dogs Trust, and many others. Phase three of the company’s plan is to bring a human-centric data economy into being as rapidly as possible.

J is also a co-founder of MyData Global, an international not-for-profit based in Helsinki. Its purpose is to empower individuals by improving their right to self-determination regarding their personal data. MyData Global has nearly 90 member organisation and over 600 individual members across industries from over 50 countries. The not-for-profit facilitates the MyData community of several thousand personal data experts and enthusiasts and was described in the European Union’s data strategy as a promising initiative for empowering citizens through exercising their digital rights.

MyLife Digital provided the personal data infrastructure for Diabetes Digital Coach, one of seven high-profile NHS England pilot projects targeting 5.5 million diabetes sufferers. For the last two years, J has also been a visiting lecturer on data and ethics at Bath Spa University.
