DataIQ Awards 2021 winner – Global data and analytics leader of the year: Wade Munsie, GSK Consumer Healthcare

DataIQ Awards 2021 winner - Global data and analytics leader of the year: Wade Munsie

Wade Munsie was appointed as the first-ever chief data officer to lead the new data office and deliver a data strategy for over 20,000 colleagues globally. With a vision for the business to be transformed with data as a core pillar, his journey began at the start of the pandemic, focusing on accelerating human understanding and fuelling growth through bold decisions.

The lockdown meant a fully virtual working environment, but the year saw over 100 data and analytics practitioners built into a team within months. Leadership has been central to this – Munsie has built an open, empowered, collaborative and fun culture which has seen CSAT scores of 4.8 out of 5 from a 100% response rate, demonstrating the positive impact which the data team has been making for its stakeholders. The team also has an engagement score of 96% – the highest in the company’s history.

Putting people at the core of unlocking the value of data, Munsie has ensured near gender balance and diversity with members from over 30 countries and all levels of educational attainment. This is critical when engaging with 50 business leaders across eight functions and four regions.

The data strategy introduced by Munsie focuses on trust, empowerment and innovation as the keys to creating a data-driven mindset and using data science and AI to beat the market. He has also introduced the first AI strategy, as well as an ethics and governance framework.

He also identified opportunities to leverage digital, data and analytics for competitive advantage, creating an enterprise-wide data literacy programme to empower over 100 business leaders and make data a common language. A first-ever data visualisation centre of excellence has been built using in-depth feedback and persona work at a global level to provide specialist support, advice and service. Having listened to the pain points across the organisation, master data management has also been launched.

Team wellbeing is always an area of focus for Munsie – in a digital workplace, this has meant Zoom coffee breaks, Friday socials and a team steps challenge every Thursday that saw 5,000-plus miles covered in six months. Wellness Wednesdays see all meetings kept out of diaries.

Munsie says: “I want to build a data function that not only delivers value to the business, but also doing it in a way that is ethically responsible in the use of data.”
