DataIQ Awards 2022 winner - New talent or data apprentice (Data titan): Hannah Lee

Hannah Lee joined the data team at Zurich Insurance in 2019 after her original team was disbanded and, during a period of upheaval and change, she embraced the up-skilling required and within months was making an impact on a proposition to detect mould for vulnerable tenants using Internet of Things (IOT) devices. Since joining, Hannah has won a prestigious Insurance Times innovation award and enrolled on a data science degree apprenticeship – she has subsequently been promoted to data scientist.

The projects led by Hannah impact the daily lives of people, including using IOT devices to predict damp and mould for vulnerable tenants in housing associations, which was awarded the IOT breakthrough prize in 2019.

In 2020, the Zurich team expanded and Hannah became a role model for new staff while simultaneously enrolling into a degree apprenticeship where she achieved the highest grades in her cohort. Furthermore, Hannah was active in outreach projects, including an event with Girls in Data, STEM outreach programmes and diversity encouragement.

Since becoming a full data scientist, Hannah is now the technical lead on several projects, one of which is the development of machine learning models to support automation and innovation. Hannah now regularly liaises with senior stakeholders to provide high-level updates and she continues to exemplify the best qualities of a data scientist, combining comfort with ambiguity, technical with business knowledge.
